Mysterious Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another day, another black cat painting!  I'm enjoying my new softer style.  I painted another black cat that I have painted in the past.  Nice to do several versions of the same pose to see what can be changed up.  This painting along with my other original cat paintings are available on ebay HERE.  Today's mysterious black cat painting measures 8 x 10 inches.
The last version I painted of this pose was a 5 x 7 inch painting and was sold on ebay.
 Thanks for stopping by!

The Witch's Cat - Original Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Sometimes it is fun to paint the same image more than one time.  I have painted one photo of Tish at least four times and each time I learn something new.  Today's painting is one that I painted a while back.  I thought I would try to paint it as a softer version, but strangely enough it came out quite a bit like the original version!  Maybe my style just can't be softened so easily :-)  Here is today's version and below it the original version from a year or so ago.  Available on ebay HERE.

Luna My Tuxedo Cat - Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Today's small painting, 6 x 6 inches, is a study for a large 3 foot by 3 foot painting I'm going to do of my Luna the tuxedo cat.  Luna has the prettiest eyes, they really are the color of a luna moth - that pale greenish yellowish color - so lovely.  I can't wait to try this painting BIG!
My Lou is the sweetest cat with a shy expression - she's a really gentle soul.

The Cat with Kaleidoscope Eyes - Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

I'm really happy with today's painting!  I call it "The Cat with Kaleidoscope Eyes" because of the sketchy impressionist style painting of the eyes.  I like to paint closeup cat faces where the emphasis is on the eyes and keep the rest of the details to a minimum, like today's painting.
I think I will paint this in a large version as well - maybe 4 feet by 4 feet.  That should be fun!  Today's painting is 6 x 6 inches on archival gessoboard and is available on my ebay auctions HERE.

Two Black Cats - Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Not one black cat today, but two!  This pair of black cats was fun to paint.  I kept the front cat very simple and focused my attention on the black cat in the back that was catching the sunlight.  My favorite part of this painting is the front cat's eye - very sketchy and interesting colors, but quite simple.  This is a larger painting, 24 x 24 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas.  This one is destined for the antiques booth as soon as it dries.

Antique Impressionist Style Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Today's black cat painting is very loose and sketchy with a diagonal slant to a lot of the brushstrokes.  I really like combining my favorite parts of a sketch with an oil painting.  Scumbling the black paint on very thin and then coming in with the smaller, sketchy paint lines.  Like sketching and painting, all at the same time!
This is an original oil painting on canvas with stretcher bars measuring 10 x 8 inches and is available on my ebay auctions HERE.

Sketchy, Loose Original Oil Painting of a Black Cat by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another painting of a black cat (no surprises there!).  Keeping it loose and sketchy.  This one has a tail that is moving in the background - fun to do!

Today's painting is 8 x 8 inches on archival canvas board and is available on my ebay auctions HERE.

Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Today's black cat painting was done with as little strokes as possible.  I just wanted to put the paint where it went and not mess around too much.  I'm happy with the results.
This original oil painting on archival gessoboard measures 5 x 7 inches and is available on my ebay auctions HERE.

Cat Oil Painting - Black Cat by Diane Irvine Armitage - Original Art

Well, it was like pulling teeth getting started painting today!  I hadn't done much painting at all for at least a month because I was so busy getting everything packed and ready for the new antiques booth.  So my first attempt at painting today got wiped off - we call that a wiper.  But not to be discouraged, I went in the house and watched some of Susan Lyon's portrait painting video and after watching I was much inspired and made another attempt.  This time the painting worked out just fine.  I highly recommend any and all of Susan Lyon's painting videos - she is an amazing painter and a wonderful teacher.

Antique Ebonized Cabinet with Original Oil Painting Panels

More work on the 1920s antique china cabinet with the two black Bombay cat paintings.  Both paintings are finished now and I am ebonizing parts of the cabinet for a darker, more mysterious overall look.  There is a lovely piece of old birds-eye veneer along the top that I am not ebonizing.  So with that bit of brown left, I am picking out other brown parts to leave as well.  Should be finished ebonizing the rest tomorrow.

Antique 1920s Cabinet with Hand Painted Black Cat Panel - Original Oil Painting

Here is one panel of two that I am painting on this pretty 1920s antique china cabinet.  There will be a black cat on either side of the glass door to the cabinet.  This cabinet will be available at my antiques booth in June and will hold my skull collection.  I painted this from a photo of two Bombay cats with really huge eyes.
Monday I will paint the second panel.

Hand Painted Antique Cabinet Doors - Original Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

I am working on furniture for my booth at The Old Barn Antique Mall and today's project is an antique dresser that has two cabinet doors at the bottom.  I am ebonizing the dresser so it will be black and doing two original oil paintings for the cabinet doors of black cats.  Very loose and suggestive - more like a dream or a memory.
This is the left side ...

And here is the right side ...
I will be setting my antique zinc and glass curved top cabinet on top of this dresser.  It is a glass table-top cabinet and I have lots of fun oddities to put inside : - )

The Witch's Cat - Original Oil Painting of a Black Cat by Diane Irvine Armitage

I have painted this pose in the past and thought it would be a nice one for a project I am doing.  I have a small antique sewing cabinet that I am adding a painted panel to.  This painting of a black cat will be the top panel once it dries and I assemble it.  I will take some pictures of the finished piece at that time.  This original oil painting measures 6 3/4 by 6 3/4 inches.
It is interesting to see the difference in my style from about six months ago to now.  Here is the one I did a while ago ...

Cat Painting - Original Oil Painting of a Black Cat Profile by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another in my series of 8 x 8 inch original oil paintings of Morticia, this one is a profile painting.  Keeping it loose and just enjoying the process!

This is my 100th post, so that means I must have at least 100 paintings under my belt since I started painting last August : - )

Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

And yet another painting from the Tish photo, this one 8 x 8 inches on canvas board.  I'm adding this one to my series of 8 x 8 paintings for the October art show.  I want to hang all the 8 x 8s in a row together if possible.

Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another painting of my favorite model the squishy Tishy.  This is a little painting for a change, 8 x 8 inches.  I have a box of black plein air frames that are 8 x 8 inches so I thought I would paint up some black cat paintings to fit them for the October art show.

Large Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Today's BIG black cat painting is 24 x 36 inches - that's a big cat face!  Painted from yesterday's study, I am happy with the results.  It is fun to paint big!

Cat Painting - Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another sketchy, loose oil painting of a black cat, 11 x 14 inches on archival gessoboard.  A study for a larger painting which I will start tomorrow.  I think I will leave in more of the body at the bottom for the larger version.  I'm happy with the overall sketchy appearance of this one.  Kind of like the look of a pastel painting, but done in oils.
You can see this painting on my Pinterest Gallery of Cats page HERE.
