The Witch's Cat - Original Black Cat Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Sometimes it is fun to paint the same image more than one time.  I have painted one photo of Tish at least four times and each time I learn something new.  Today's painting is one that I painted a while back.  I thought I would try to paint it as a softer version, but strangely enough it came out quite a bit like the original version!  Maybe my style just can't be softened so easily :-)  Here is today's version and below it the original version from a year or so ago.  Available on ebay HERE.

Well, it was like pulling teeth getting started painting today!  I hadn't done much painting at all for at least a month because I was so busy getting everything packed and ready for the new antiques booth.  So my first attempt at painting today got wiped off - we call that a wiper.  But not to be discouraged, I went in the house and watched some of Susan Lyon's portrait painting video and after watching I was much inspired and made another attempt.  This time the painting worked out just fine.  I highly recommend any and all of Susan Lyon's painting videos - she is an amazing painter and a wonderful teacher.

Sketchy Loose Black Cat Original Oil Painting by Diane Irvine Armitage

Another loose, sketchy cat painting.  I painted this from a photo found on Petfinder of a shelter cat.  The photo was pretty vague and I figured that could either work good for me being as there is less detail to noodle with, or could really mess up my day.  Luckily it worked in my favor - sort of like squinting down to see the basic shapes, well this photo only had basic shapes.

Black Cat Crossed My Path

Next in my series of black cat paintings, Black Cat Crossed My Path.  I like it when a black cat crosses my path!  LOL  Happens to me a lot since I have two of them at home.  This is a younger black kitty with a cute little square face.

Blue Twilight Black Cat

There's nothing like a black cat at twilight!  This one is in oils, 10 x 8 inches on archival canvas board.  It is fun to play with the blues and purples and again, the whiskers really make the painting.

The Witch's Cat

Well, I'm finally back to painting!  We got the exterior of our house painted and everything is put back together, so back to the studio for some much needed painting time.  Another black cat today.  This one has the intense gaze of a witch's cat, so that is what I called it.  More fun with painting whiskers - they really make the painting if you get them right.  Also, I like to leave a black edge (black gesso showing through) because I am fond of the old mural and decorative painters that used that in their paintings or murals.

I Put a Spell on You

No painting for me for over a week!  We are getting our house painted and I had to run around getting paint and other supplies and then it's impossible to concentrate and paint with a lot of interruptions.  So finally I'm back at it today.

Another in my series of black cat closeups.  Always interesting to paint all the colors in the eyes.  Cat's eyes are so beautiful!  This one is in oil, 7 x 5 inches on canvas board.
